Location

Calrossy Anglican School - William Cowper Campus (co-educational Primary and Secondary Boys) is located on a picturesque 27-acre semi-rural site on Moore Creek Rd, on the outskirts of Tamworth.  Students enjoy the benefits of a wide range of facilities as well as close proximity to the sporting, educational and cultural facilities of Tamworth.

Facilities

On site, our facilities provide a comfortable learning environment for students throughout the year. Each classroom has reverse cycle air conditioning. All rooms have access to information technology through the provision of computers, data projectors or Smart Boards.

There are specialist rooms for Music, Computers, Science, Art, Graphics, and Library, as well as a brand new Design and Technology and Agriculture building with purpose-designed equipment and facilities.  As part of Calrossy Anglican School our students have physical and virtual access to the library on the Brisbane Street Campus, and its extensive range of resources.

Sporting facilities are continually being developed. Students already have access to our basketball and tennis courts, playing fields, and cricket nets. A wet weather shelter has recently been constructed, including a training area for hockey.

History

The Secondary Boys’ school commenced operating in 2001 within the grounds of Calrossy Anglican School - Brisbane Street Campus.. The Primary school had started just two years earlier in 1999 with 31 students ranging from Kindergarten to Year 6.

By August 2001 there were 21 students enrolled in the Secondary Boys' school, along with a total enrolment of 180 students. Land had been purchased for the school in 2000 and with the new buildings completed, the school relocated to the present site on Moore Creek Road in 2002. Our first candidature sat for the Higher School Certificate in 2005.

In 2006 Wiliam Cowper Secondary Boys became part of Tamworth Anglican College (now Calrossy Anglican School), combining with Calrossy Pre School, William Cowper Primary School and Calrossy Girls’ School. Each of these schools retains its own unique character and is focussed on providing the best possible education for its students. In the case of the Secondary Boys, programs and activities are consistently designed with a clear understanding of what boys need. However, the schools are now part of the Calrossy Anglican School structure developing common values, educational practices and expertise in teaching within a Christian framework.

Who was William Cowper?

William Macquarie Cowper was the first Australian-born man to be ordained as an Anglican clergyman. He was a godson of governor Lachlan Macquarie.

From 1836 until 1848, while serving as Chaplain to the Australian Agricultural Company at Port Stephens, he became the first Anglican clergyman to minister in Tamworth, making regular annual horseback trips to the area to conduct church services, baptisms and marriages.

On his return to Sydney, he played a prominent role in the church and was very closely involved in the management of Church School education. He was the Dean of Sydney from 1858 until his death in 1902.
