Our Curriculum

All students from Kindergarten to Year 6 study the mandatory core curriculum as set by the New South Wales Board of Studies, which includes English; Mathematics; Science and Technology; Human Society and its Environment; Personal Development, Health and Physical Education; Creative and Practical Arts and a school-based program of Christian Studies.

At Calrossy Anglican School Co-educational Primary we hold firm to the belief that the acquisition of literacy and numeracy skills are the essential foundations for future success. All teaching staff are trained in the Spalding Method, a multi-sensory, explicit teaching approach to literacy, as well as "Learning in Early Numeracy" an approach to teaching numeracy using practical 'hands-on' strategies to develop understanding of the concepts and processes of mathematics. Each school day includes literacy and numeracy lessons and activities for all children.

Regular and comprehensive professional development opportunities are provided for staff to enable them to keep up-to-date with developments in teaching and curriculum change.

Specialist teachers enhance the teaching and learning program through the provision of study in Christian Studies, Japanese, and Music.

Students in Years 3-6 participate in the University of NSW Mathematics, English and Science competitions. Students in Years 4-6 have the opportunity to participate in Tournament of the Minds and the Mathematics Olympiads and interested Chess players participate in the NSW Junior Chess League competitions.

Students in Years 3 and 5 participate in the annual National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy.

The Key Learning Areas for the Preparatory (Prep) Class include social and emotional competence; language development and communication skills (including the beginning stages of reading and writing); active engagement in learning; early mathematical understandings; health and physical well-being. This occurs in a happy and supported learning environment.
